Homeowners across the globe deal with unsavory insects and critters infesting their residence. Infestations, whether insects or creepy critters, affect the structural integrity of a home and the health of all those inside. A cockroach infestation is among the list of creatures no one wants in their home. However, it can be eliminated through fumigation.

Health Hazards

Cockroaches live in all kinds environments and travel up into homes and buildings searching for food and warmth. As they travel around the ground, cockroaches leave behind bacteria, parasites, and pathogens. These remnants of cockroaches affect humans of all ages with disease and unhealthy environments.

Cockroaches don’t have to contaminate anything within a household to cause problems — they do so by existing. Their droppings, urine, decaying roach bodies, and molted skin break down and become airborne particles. These particles pose a serious risk to people with asthma, especially children, as the roach dust enters the lungs and produce allergic reactions. Symptoms of the allergic reactions include:

  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Severe asthma

Cockroach Facts

Although cockroaches are generally despised, they are a creature with many interesting facts and characteristics. According to scholars, cockroaches have been around since the time of the dinosaurs, evolving into some of the most adaptable pests on earth.

Approximately 4,000 species of cockroaches inhabit the earth. In the United States, 70 species of cockroaches inhabit homes. These species, American cockroaches, prefer warm, dark, and wet areas surrounding or underneath houses. Unfortunately, they are also common in restaurants, grocery stores, and hospitals.

Explaining the Fumigation Process

To get rid of cockroaches from your home, fumigation using Vikane ® is recommended. As a gas fumigant, Vikane ® is labeled to eliminate all cockroaches because it reaches areas conventional treatments miss or cannot reach.

Prior to fumigation , all domestic animals and desired plants are removed from the area. Deactivated flames and pilot lights ensure no reaction with the gas, and the occupants remove all sealed food located in the house when they leave. The sealed structure allows the gas to penetrate all areas of the house for a prolonged length of time. The recommended amount of time ranges between 2 and 72 hours for maximized potency. In addition to the Vikane ®  fumigant, the fumigator releases a warning agent called chloropicrin. The agent deters people from entering the structure during the process.

The amount of time for the fumigation ultimately depends on the specifics of the job, level of infestation, and type of infestation. The amount of Vikane ® used for termites differs from a treatment for cockroaches.

After the fumigation , the professional fumigator will air out the structure using fans for a prescribed amount of time. Doing so ensures the structure is safe for the inhabitants.

No one wants an infestation within their home. Least of all a cockroach infestation which can be detrimental to the health and atmosphere of the house and occupants. Insects that feed on human blood can cause incredible discomfort. In many cases, we don't even know we've been bitten until after they have had their meal. Some inject an anticoagulant into the bloodstream to suck up their meal faster, while others clamp on and indulge in our life-preserving liquid. It helps to know which of these creatures to be watchful of before they attack. That way, we can take active steps to avoid the misery before they get a chance to start.

As their name implies, carpet beetles infest carpets and other fibers and are especially active during springtime. The first sign of an infestation is often a dead carpet beetle trapped in a window sill. But you can be sure if there’s one; there are many more. Carpet beetles typically live outdoors but are wintering insects . They will seek the warm cozy interior of your home after temperatures drop, and once inside, they become a threat to your property and food and can cause rashes with their tiny hairs. Carpet beetles feature: “Mottled” coloring of black, brown, white, or yellow. Oval-shaped bodies. Adult length between 1/16 - 1/8 inches. The first concern with any infestation is safety.

Aracniphobs everywhere look to winter as a moment’s respite from spiders. The myth goes that spiders are cold-blooded and can’t survive the winter, but the truth is complex. There are 400 different species of spider in Indiana and 3,500 nationwide. Each one has different behaviors and approaches to surviving the cold.
